The Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology defines itself as a
public museum of international standard. It is the only
museum (outside State and University Museums) in Queensland
specifically dedicated to the preservation and display of
world art, archaeology and cultural heritage from
prehistory to the 20th Century AD. The Abbey Museum is
responsible for the historic collections that once formed
the Abbey Folk Park at New Barnet (1934-1945), Britain’s
first museum of social history.
To inspire curiosity and wonder, promote education about
the past and to share the human story with the world.
To collect, develop and maintain a museum to document,
research and preserve, exhibit and interpret objects of
historical, social and cultural significance.
To maintain the integrity of the collections of Rev. J.S.M.
Ward (1885-1949), founder of the Abbey Folk Park, the
forerunner of the Abbey Museum.
It is our mission to provide an understanding of the past
through dynamic interpretation and historical re-enactment.
With a strong commitment to research, education and public
involvement, the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology will
cement its place among the premier history and art museums
within Australia and the world.
