Join the Friends of the Abbey Museum

 

Become a Friend of the Abbey Museum, and join others in a worth-while cause, because we can't get by without our Friends!

The Friends of the Abbey Museum (FOTAM) is a support group with objectives which aims to:

(a) foster an increased public awareness of the Abbey Museum and of the benefits it can bestow on the visiting public in general and the young in particular.

(b) assist the Abbey Museum by providing funds, gifts and personal exertion towards:

  • maintenance of the fabric of the Abbey Museum and its contents,

  • future extensions to the buildings: and

  • acquisitions for the collections contained in the Abbey Museum;

(c) promote a general awareness of the arts by participation in cultural activities, through visits to cultural, historical and environmental exhibitions, centres and regions: by the holding of art festivals, exhibitions, competitions and other activities;
(d) assist the spread of culture through the publication of suitable literature and a newsletter, LINDISFARNE, which will include topics of cultural interest and provide members with details of the Association’s activities.

Members Benefits and Opportunities:

  • Free admission to the Museum

  • FOTAM members may attend an enjoyable and educational program of talks, functions and social occasions throughout the year, each having a historical or artistic theme.

  • Concessions to the annual Abbey Medieval Festival.

  • Members may apply to access the Abbey Museum’s extensive library for research purposes.

  • Members will receive our newsletter LINDISFARNE free several times a year.

  • FOTAM members may become involved with the Museum in a voluntary capacity assisting on the front desk, working with tour groups and schools, research work or employing special skills in numerous ways.

FOTAM Goals

The FOTAM Executive has proposed that the Friends undertake fund-raising in 2008 specifically aimed for the conservation of the Winchester Cathedral stained glass windows.

FOTAM will also aim to purchase one item needed for the Museum collections each year.

FOTAM Achievements

Recent gifts of artefacts to the Museum include:

  • Bronze Age Danish flint dagger

  • Egyptian burial mask

  • Luristan bronze cult figure

Donation of artefacts to the collections from FOTAM members include:

  • Collection of sixty-two manuscripts dating from 1630 from the town of Aysgarth, Yorkshire.

  • Collection of medieval pottery from Holland.

  • Collection of fans.

Other Assistance includes:

  • 2007 - Funded construction of the Museum Shed to house props, costumes and materials used for the Medieval Festival: Cost Approximately $80,000.

  • 2004 - Upgrade of computers in Museum.

  • 2003 - Installation of air-conditioning in Museum.
