Leaving Bequests to the Abbey Museum

If you are one of those many people who have derived pleasure and knowledge from the Abbey Museum, and want to provide for the Museum’s growth and continuity, you might consider a legacy or bequest?

TYPES OF BEQUESTS
A person who makes a legacy or bequest will usually do so in one of the following ways:

  • A specific gift . . .
In which a specific sum of money or property, such as land, shares or bonds,
or items such as a collection of antiquities or works of art, is nominated.

  • A proportionate gift . . .
When a specific proportion of the estate is nominated; i.e. “1/3 of my estate.” Or
    “50% of my shares.”

  • A residuary bequest . . .
When the remainder or a portion of the remainder of the estate, after all other debts or bequests have been settled, is nominated.

HOW A BEQUEST CAN HELP THE ABBEY MUSEUM

People who make bequests to cultural institutions are generally persons who want to do something useful with their money, property or possessions after their death.

The Abbey Museum is one of those rare treasure houses of heritage but like everything else of value requires money to survive. Your gift can help it grow and continue giving pleasure and knowledge to thousands of people.

Your gift can be used in a number of ways:

  • By contributing to the building itself through an endowment fund or funds
    towards a new gallery.

  • By helping preserve the treasures already in the collections.

  • By donating works of art or antiquities from your own collection or providing funds for the purchase of new works of art.

There is great satisfaction in gifting, knowing that your donation can be used to support the
building fund, or endow a work of art that will carry your name and help educate thousands
of people.

MAKING A BEQUEST

Making a bequest to the Museum by of legacy is quite simple.  It involves contacting your trustee or solicitor and making an alteration to your will.

To ensure that your bequest is legal it is safer to use the following clause:

I give, devise and bequeath to the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, Inc. of 1-63 The Abbey Place, Caboolture, 4510,

for its general purpose  ______________________ [i.e. the sum of money, description of shares, bonds or property , works of arts, etc.]

I declare that the receipt of the director, or treasurer, or other proper officer of the Museum, shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executor(s) or trustee(s) and that (they, he/she) shall not be bound to see the application thereof.

If an artefact or work of art is being gifted, it is necessary to check with the Museum first to make sure it comes within the Museum’s collection policy.  The Museum has a strict collection policy to maintain the quality of its collections.

Email the Director on director@abbeymuseum.asn.au or Phone 07 5495 1652.

A problem can arise if the object is inadequately described in your will, so make sure that your solicitor or trustee understands what object it is that you intend to leave to the Museum.

The Abbey Museum is a registered charity with the Australian Tax Office.  All donations over $2 are fully tax-deductible for Australian citizens.
