The Abbey Museum offers two programs for Primary School students, one on Ancient Egypt and the other on the Middle Ages.

Teachers have the opportunity to bring SOSE studies to life with our programs, which are tailored to Place and Space and Time, Continuity and Change outcomes as well as Visual Arts outcomes.

Time Travellers is suitable for Years 2 to 6.

TIME TRAVELLERS – I DIG EGYPT

This program is designed to give students of the Lower & Middle Primary an opportunity to experience a comparison between life in Ancient Egypt and life today.

It can be a whole day activity of four selected sessions which take students about 45 minutes each.  Teachers may select sessions that best support their curriculum needs.  All equipment is provided.

Suggested Timetable:
10.00 - 10.20 am Morning Tea
10.20 - 11.05 am 1st session
11.05 - 11.50 am 2nd session
11.50 - 12.35 pm 3rd session
12.35 - 1.05 pm Lunch
1.05 - 1.50 pm 4th session

SESSION TOPICS (Choose four of these.)

Session 1:

Museum discovery sheet

Students view the Egyptian display in the Museum and complete a “DISCOVERY SHEET” requiring 18 responses. (Free download available below).

Session 2:

Ancient Egyptian Tombs

Students experience a “hands-on” explanation of the mummification process using some replica artefacts.  During this activity they will learn how Egyptian bodies were embalmed and wrapped ready for the world of the “afterlife”.

Session 3:

Discovering hieroglyphs

Students play a Concentration/Memory game with hieroglyph tiles.  Then they are able to make a Cartouche (Name panel) of their own name using hieroglyphs.

Session 4:

How archaeologists work

Students are shown the procedures used by archaeologists and then they are able to “dig” for artefacts.  The discussion which follows will give them some clues to ancient Egyptian life.  This is an outdoor activity under cover.

Session 5: {COMING SOON}

Ancient Egyptian Food.

In this activity students learn about the diet of ancient Egyptians, what they ate, and how their food was prepared.  Students also get to find out about fishing, fowling and hunting.

Session 6: {COMING SOON}

Ancient Egyptian Fashion

In this session students investigate the fabrics, clothing and shoes worn by ancient Egyptians.  They also check out ancient Egyptian jewellery, cosmetics and toiletries.

Recommended duration: Full day (3 to 4 hours)
Suitable for: Years 2 to 6 (Can be modified to suit other year levels)
Student numbers: Maximum: 60. Minimum: 20

SESSION TOPICS (Choose four of these.)

Session 1:

Medieval Fashion
In this session students explore the fabrics and clothing people wore in Medieval Europe. They compare the clothing of nobles, merchants and peasants with clothing worn today and get to try on some of the garments.

Session 2:

Medieval Food

In this session students learn about meals, foods, utensils and cutlery of Medieval times. They delve into some of the customs of the period and find out about foods that were not available then.

Session 3:

Medieval Games

In this session students explore different games children played in the Middle Ages. Students play a series of Medieval games - ring a ring o’ roses, skittles, shuttlecock, blind man’s bluff and juggling.

Session 4:

Medieval Songs and Dances

In this session students learn about music and dances of the Middle Ages. They learn a simple Medieval dance and a short song in Middle English (used in Medieval England).

Session 5:

Stained Glass Crafts

In this session students learn about Medieval craftsmen focusing on the makers of stained glass. They visit the Abbey Church to look at Medieval stained glass, discuss patterns and colours and learn a little about heraldry. Students put together a large jigsaw of a stained glass window, design a heraldic shield and colour a drawing of a window.

Session 6:

Calligraphy and Illumination

In this session students visit the Manuscript Gallery in the Museum to look at samples of writing and illumination up to 800 years old and discuss how people wrote. They see old writing materials, discuss how ink was made and colour-in an illuminated letter.
