Australians are great collectors.
Many people have spent time building up a collection
that they wish to see preserved for others to enjoy.
Every year the Abbey Museum receives donations of
cultural objects for its collections.
Among the wonderful items given to us is a large
collection of early medieval pottery from the
Netherlands; a 12th century limestone relief of the
Deposition from the Cross; a magnificently illuminated
Quran found at the siege of Lucknow and many other
valuable objects of art that enrich and enhance the
collections. Most recently a lady kindly donated a
series of carved 17th and 18th century bible boxes, and
another a purse set with crystal and paste that has been
attributed to Lady Emma Hamilton, mistress of Lord
Horatio Nelson.
One recent donation is a series of wonderful East Javan
andesite sculptures dating to the 12-13th century AD. |

If you have an artefact or work of art that you would
like to donate to the Museum and are not sure whether it
fits the Museum's COLLECTIONS POLICY, please just phone
us and ask.
The
Australian Government offers tax incentives for the
donation of antiquities and art objects over a certain
value. Museum staff can advise you about the processes
involved. However, it is important to discuss the
donation early, as the item must be independently valued
prior to its donation.
